What is diabetes?
Just as your car needs fuel in order to drive, the cells in your body need fuel to provide energy for living, breathing, seeing and thinking. This fuel comes from the food we eat, which is digested and is absorbed into the blood stream as glucose, a form of sugar.
To be absorbed and used by the body cells, this glucose needs the assistance of a hormone called Insulin, which is normally produced by a gland called the pancreas.
Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which this mechanism of producing and / or using insulin ceases to work normally, and your body is unable to use glucose normally.
