Life Insurance and Lupus: Will you Qualify?

A lupus diagnosis can change the way you think about your future, especially when it comes to protecting the people who depend on you. Many South Africans living with lupus assume that getting life insurance will be difficult or even impossible, but there is a solution. With AllLife you can get life insurance of up to R3 million with their Chronic Life Plan. So yes, the fact of the matter is that a lupus diagnosis does not mean you will not qualify for life cover.

But how much is known about this disease? Interestingly, lupus is often called the “invisible illness” because many symptoms cannot be seen from the outside, even when a person is seriously fatigued or unwell.

What is the definition of Lupus?

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in the body. This can lead to inflammation, pain, fatigue, and damage to organs such as the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, and lungs. According to the Mayo Clinic, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is the most common form of lupus and can affect multiple parts of the body simultaneously.

Symptoms often vary from person to person and may range from mild flare-ups to more severe complications.

How do you get Lupus?

Researchers still do not know the exact cause of lupus, but medical experts believe it develops through a combination of genetic, hormonal, environmental, and immune system factors.

The Cleveland Clinic explains that certain triggers may contribute to lupus developing or triggering flare-ups, including:

  • Family history and genetics
  • Hormonal changes
  • Viral infections
  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Certain medications
  • Sun exposure

Why South Africa’s climate can be challenging for people living with lupus

South Africans generally spend more time outdoors in the sun than people in many European countries, whether at the beach, around the braai, or enjoying sport and warm weather. For people living with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), this can create health challenges because UV exposure may trigger flare-ups and worsen symptoms. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, up to 7 in 10 people living with lupus find that sunlight or even certain indoor lighting can make their condition worse.

Interesting facts about Lupus

Here are several facts about lupus that many people may not know:

  • Around 90% of lupus patients are women
  • Lupus symptoms often appear in cycles called flare-ups
  • The disease can sometimes take years to diagnose because symptoms mimic other conditions
  • Lupus can affect almost any organ in the body
  • Many people with lupus continue working, exercising, and raising families
  • Early treatment and proper disease management can improve quality of life substantially

Who mostly gets diagnosed with Lupus and who is at risk?

The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that millions of people worldwide live with some form of lupus. The condition is most commonly diagnosed in women between the ages of 15 and 44, which means it often develops during the childbearing and working years of life.

Research also shows that lupus tends to affect women of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent more frequently and often more severely than women of European descent. Some South African medical observations and studies suggest that black South African women may experience lupus more frequently or more severely in certain cases.

According to Mediclinic:… certain communities exhibiting high prevalence rates despite international or general tendencies. For example, there is a high prevalence of lupus in the Western Cape of South Africa amongst people of mixed ancestry (so-called ‘coloured’ people). But for some reason lupus is rare among black people in rural areas of South Africa.

Hormonal factors are believed to play an important role in why lupus affects women more often.

Despite these challenges, many women living with lupus continue to build careers, raise families, exercise, travel, and lead active lives with proper treatment and disease management.

Many people living with Lupus choose to explore life insurance.

If you have been diagnosed with SLE, it should be taken seriously. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, early diagnosis and proper treatment can significantly improve long-term outcomes for people living with the condition.
