Sakhile was diagnosed with HIV 22 years ago. 

Neither the cause nor the announcement of this reality hold easy memories for him… 

Unprotected sex at an alcohol-fuelled party is where his story starts. It’s all a fuzzy recollection. Except for the surreal next morning, when a friend casually told him the girl’s status. He couldn’t remember much, but was certain that she had not informed him. 

Sakhile was devastated. A deeply disturbing time lay ahead. Post exposure prophylactic treatment wasn’t available yet and there was nothing he could do. 

Since he was a blood donor who truly wanted to make a difference, Sakhile decided to continue doing this. 

Until the letter from the SANBS arrived. His clinic confirmed everything. 

Describing the moment as “heart breaking”, he adds that he did want to go on living in a meaningful way.

But as time passed, his thoughts and reason became increasingly distorted. Sakhile considered committing suicide – and, fortunately, all courage failed him. 

Now, at 41, he’s overcome all internal conflict. Ascribing his survival to the love and support of his family and friends, he notes that, without them, he certainly wouldn’t have been around. 

Sakhile shares his HIV status honestly and easily. He hopes that this encourages others to manage their health responsibly. 

He’s lost many close friends to the disease and emphasises the vital importance of keeping to the prescribed medication. He has seen that hope exists for those who remain responsible.
