Praveena sustained severe heart muscle damage in 1999 when Bronchitis resulted in a Myocarditis Diagnosis. A year later she was placed on the priority list for a heart transplant. 

A donor was found within 2 days and Praveena became the first female to receive a successful heart transplant at Entabeni hospital, Durban. Her recovery went well and filled her with hope. 

Unfortunately she soon contracted Optic Neuritis – which left her blind. Specialist prescriptions of high steroid dosages did however enable Praveena to regain her sight within 3 months. 

The year 2003 brought a precious gift… In the care of 3 specialist surgeons, Praveena was the first heart recipient in SA (and number 8 worldwide) to give birth to a healthy baby – a beautiful little girl. Natanya’s parents had yearned for a child always and couldn’t have felt more elated.

Yet, a last trial lay ahead for 2003. Praveena suffered a mild stroke when a blood clot developed after the C-section. It reached her brain but dissolved – sparing her life. 

Recently, she’s also had to undergo a full hysterectomy. 

Unfailing support and love from her treasured husband, family and friends, together with committed prayers and positivity have carried Praveena through to restored health and a joyous life. 

Praveena embodies the spirit of a true survivor. Being living proof that miracles do happen, she understands the critically fine line humankind treads on in every moment of existence. Being forced to extract profound strength and courage from deep within, she conquered fear – exchanging it for gratitude and excitement!
