Finding himself being rushed to hospital unexpectedly, Mark’s life completely changed course on discovering that he was in danger and urgently needed a kidney transplant. 

Plagued by the myriad questions mulling through his mind, he didn’t even know the cause. He couldn’t understand why he, Mark, had been singled out for trauma. An avid sportsman, he feared that all physical activity would simply cease. Finally, at wit’s end, he’d found no answers. 

Dialysis was even more draining. Physically, psychologically and even on an emotional level. 

In 2013 his sister was identified as donor and this brought about a second turning point for Mark.

After recovering, he connected with the South African Transplant Association. With them, he decided to take up athletics again. 

Deeply frustrated at first for failing at his talent, he continued. Without realising that perseverance would bring about complete transformation… 

Many questions still trouble him. He still cannot find answers. But he’s discovered hope and authentic purpose. 

Mark is a true blue champion. In sport and life. He’s rewritten the script of his story with such extraordinary tenacity, all past loss has been completely outweighed by overwhelming gain.
