Still in his early 30’s, Ebrahim was experiencing troubling, abnormal symptoms and consulted with a specialist. A tumour was discovered through exploratory surgery and Stage 3 Colon Cancer was diagnosed. 

Radiation preceded the chemo programme. He describes both these experiences as “jarring” and as a restructure of his “entire foundation as a human being”. And emphasises that he hopes no repeat ever occurs. 

As these treatment practices do not align with his family’s religious and general cultural values, Ebrahim did not get the support he needed from them. 

He did find that in psychologists. His closest friends were also there for him – although he knows how distressing it was for them to witness the effects. Underplaying this devastating trauma too, Ebrahim notes that the experience was “nothing like the movies”.

Successful elimination of all his Colon Cancer was announced in early 2023. Ebrahim was struck by disbelief and shock. It was a surreal reality adjustment. Anxiety and fear that it may return gripped him for months. Even now, sporadic thoughts of doubt still flash through his mind. 

However, these have been overshadowed… Ebrahim calls today his “new lease on life” and his heart is filled with so much joy, he even appreciates the sunshine.
