With a sense of humour that lifts the heaviest of spirits, Brian is a shining example of the powerful radiance of positivity.

A mechanical engineer, he described his loved ones as “a medical family” after his wife’s back fusion and his son’s lung transplant.
In his late 50’s, Brian still considered himself healthy enough to be an anchor for them. Pursuing a wide variety of interests including photography, he also loved sports. When not cycling, he was teeing off on the golf course or working out.

It’s at the gym that Brian suddenly found himself unable to breathe. But, assuming his fitness wasn’t up to scratch, he only visited the GP later.

Brian was instantly sent to a cardiologist. Suddenly in hospital, he had to come to terms with his own limitations. His life was in danger. An aortic valve had solidified and no longer supported critical heart function. Replacement surgery had to be done –
urgently.

Brian’s spirits were anything but dampened by the experience. He reports feeling “healthy as an ox” again – the transplant he’d received was, in fact, constructed from ox heart tissue.

Underplaying the challenges of open heart surgery and its aftermath, he views life through a lighter lense. This was instrumental in returning to normal life and has also resparked his love for photography.

Brian is a braveheart of courage and fortitude. Never defeated under the duress of trauma, his positive outlook is key to the blood that pumps through his veins today. And an inspiration to anyone with the will to live.
